The State Building Code Council (SBCC) is accepting public comments on proposed changes to the new 2024 building codes, scheduled to go into effect in May 2027. These codes include the International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Mechanical Code, International Fire Code, and Uniform Plumbing Code.
These code changes will have a direct impact on residential construction costs, housing affordability, and the ability to build homes across Washington.
Some proposals will help reduce unnecessary costs and improve flexibility. Others would add new requirements that increase construction costs and make housing less attainable for Washington families.
BIAW has identified the code changes that deserve your support—and the proposals that should be opposed.
